Gray whales pass the Point Reyes coast in winter and spring. The National Park Service identifies December and January for the southbound migration and March through May for the return north. A sighting is never guaranteed, so plan a coast walk as well as a watch.
Where to watch
Start with a safe, open view of the ocean from Dillon Beach. For a more established land-based watch, Bodega Head and the Point Reyes Lighthouse and Chimney Rock are documented viewing spots. The park also names Tomales Point. Stay on marked trails and keep back from cliff edges.
What to bring
Bring binoculars, warm layers and time to scan for a spout. Check weather and park access before the drive. Dogs are prohibited at the Point Reyes Lighthouse and Chimney Rock areas, according to the park.
Sea Esta is a small Dillon Beach base for up to four guests who want a coast day and a home to return to; it does not accept pets. Check live availability; rates vary by season. The portal's Point Reyes and Tomales Bay stay guide covers alternatives.
